Pikeville Medical Center (PMC) is a proud sponsor of the Meals on Wheels Program. In the past year, PMC served nearly seven thousand meals to local organizations.
The Meals on Wheels program is designed to assist the elderly. Through this program, a volunteer, who works for one of the participating organizations will deliver a free or low-cost meal directly to those in need.
“PMC is proud to participate with the Meals on Wheels Program,” said Senior VP and COO, Kansas Justice. “PMC Food Service Department spends one hour each day for a total of 254 days per year, producing meals for the community.”
In 2019, PMC has served 3,168 meals to local organizations thus far.
“Meals on Wheels provides a wonderful service to our community,” said Meals on Wheels Volunteer, Jane Robinson.
She says those churches whose members give of their time to deliver meals to the elderly, health challenged, and disabled are rewarded by smiles and a thank you.
The goal for the home-delivered meal program is to significantly improve diet quality, increase nutrient intakes, reduce food insecurity, and improve quality-of-life among the recipients.
“This community has several people striving to make a difference in the lives of others,” said PMC Director of Food and Nutritional Services, Eric Fleming. “I am honored to work at PMC and be a part of an organization that recognizes the need to participate with local organizations.”
PMC recently announced a special parking space on the ground floor of the hospital to improve the accessibility for volunteers from local churches to pick up meals provided by PMC.
“It is important we take all measures to improve accessibility for these wonderful volunteers,” said Justice. “We take great pride in being a part of this program and want the pickup process to be as easy as possible for volunteers.”
The addition of the new parking space allows PMC to take the meals directly to the Volunteers picking-up the meals and delivering them to the community.
