Pikeville Medical Center’s (PMC) Trauma Department is a state-of-the-art facility providing around-the-clock quality healthcare during emergencies and disasters.
PMC is Kentucky’s only accredited Level II Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons (ACS). PMC’s Trauma Center is staffed by specially trained health care professionals who treat life-threatening injuries. They are equipped to handle the most high-risk of injuries such as gunshot wounds, series car crash injuries, significant burns, etc.
A Level II Trauma Center can initiate care for all injured patients. PMC offers patients 24-hour immediate coverage by surgeons, orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, anesthesiology, emergency medicine, radiology and critical care.
The state-of-the-art department includes two trauma bays, three triage bays, physiological monitoring in every room and on-site digital x-rays and CT Scans. PMC’s 320 slice scanner is one of the most advanced available. The department is now a better-equipped facility, offering quicker response times, much faster access to CT scans and faster turnaround on lab work.
The trauma center verification is an evaluation process performed by the ACS to evaluate and improve trauma care. The ACS does not designate trauma centers; instead it verifies the presence of resources for optimal care of the injured patient. These include commitment, readiness, resources, policies, patient care, and performance improvement.
