Statistics show that one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. Each October is recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the staff of the Lawson Cancer Center at Pikeville Medical Center takes this time to encourage the importance of having mammograms.

“Regular screenings are important because, with them, we are able to detect cancer at an early stage,” said Dr. Aasems Jacob, PMC Hematologist/Oncologist. “Early detection is key in the successful treatment of breast cancer.”

According to the American Cancer Society, when breast cancer is detected early and is in the localized stage, the 5-year relative survival rate is 99%. Early detection includes doing monthly self-breast exams and scheduling regular clinical breast exams and mammograms beginning at age 45.

“The number one risk factor of breast cancer is age,” said Dr. Vickie Morgan, PMC Medical Oncologist. “As women get older, the need for mammograms remains very important. I encourage women daily to please schedule an appointment and explain that it just might save their life!”

Mammograms often expose a breast lump before it can even be felt, which is why scheduling regular mammograms is vital in detecting breast cancer in its early stages.
