Pikeville Medical Center (PMC) recently was recognized by Kentucky Organ Donor Affiliates (KODA). PMC earned top honors – a platinum-level award through the Workplace Partnership for Life (WPFL) Organ Donation Campaign.
WPFL is a national initiative that unites the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) and the organ donation community with workplaces across the nation in spreading the word about the importance of donation.
PMC participated in HRSA’s WPFL Hospital Organ Donation Campaign between October 2018 and April 2019.
“The program challenges hospitals and healthcare organizations to ‘let life bloom’ by educating their staff, patients, visitors and communities about the critical need for organ, eye and tissue donation,” said KODA Community and Hospital Educator, Lauren Salyer. “The challenge offers opportunities for people to register as donors.”
She said PMC earned recognition by completing awareness and hosting registry activities.
“PMC was one of more than 1,480 organizations to participate in the 2019 campaign and one of 638 nation-wide to earn platinum recognition,” added Salyer.
KODA is dedicated to saving lives through organ and tissue donation and transplantation. The organization was formed to establish a statewide educational and procurement network. KODA is an independent, non-profit organ and tissue procurement agency.
“PMC looks for opportunities to partner with KODA so that together, we can turn an unfortunate circumstance for a family into a positive situation for someone in need of a transplant,” said PMC Senior VP and COO, Kansas Justice.
She said KODA is a valuable resource to the hospital.
“It is an honor to be recognized for the great strides made by our hospital and KODA when it comes to organ donation,” said Justice.
