Pikeville Medical Center's Pulmonary clinic serves a critical need in Eastern Kentucky, lung care. Our region is ground zero for diseases such as lung cancer and black lung.

In addition to the innovative, advanced services offered, it is important to note that our physicians have access to some of the most advanced diagnostic equipment to be found anywhere including state-of-the-art CT scanners, the Espree MRI (1.5T) as well as the Verio MRI (3.0T) and digital X-rays. Scans are available to physicians via our PACS system from almost anywhere.

COPD
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is one of the most common lung diseases. It makes it difficult to breathe. There are two main forms of COPD: Chronic bronchitis and Emphysema.

Black Lung
A lung disease that results from breathing in dust from coal, graphite, or manmade carbon over a long period of time. Also known as coal worker’s pneumoconiosis.

Bronchitis
Bronchitis is inflammation of the main air passages to the lungs. Bronchitis may be short-lived (acute) or chronic, meaning that it lasts a long time and often recurs.

Lung Cancer
The term "Lung Cancer" refers to cancers of many types that occur in the lungs.

Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS)
A special type of bronchoscope with an ultrasound probe is inserted into the airway. This provides physicians with improved imaging, access to harder to reach areas and allows for targeting smaller areas of interest. Tissue  samples can be collected for analysis.

Pulmonary Hypertension
Pulmonary Hypertension is increased blood pressure specifically in the arteries of the lungs.

Fibrosis
Refers to Pulmonary Fibrosis (scarring of the lung tissue).

Asthma
Asthma is an inflammatory disorder of the airways, which causes attacks of wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing.

Cough
Coughing is a natural reflex provided by the body to help clear the airways of obstructions. When couching becomes chronic or severe, prompt, professional medical attention must be sought to determine the cause.
